Piano Teacher

Welcome Back Music Students!

As the exciting and heartwarming memories of the holidays linger in our homes, I would like to thank each new and returning music student for their lesson dedication.  As you perform the music you practiced over the Christmas season, there is a new sense of purpose and direction in your style.  It is exciting to see improvement each week and know that you love to learn.  I want to help each new piece become easy for you by the end of the lesson, so your focus can remain on improvements throughout the week.  As you lay a good foundation in note reading, timing, and lyric study, the interpretation, color, and expressiveness of style begins to glow.  Each practice day has led to improved musicianship, and there are remarkable jumps of skill on a weekly basis.  I am excited to be a part of your musical journey and look forward to working with you in 2016.

The Juilliard Manuscript Collection Website

View this amazing collection of rare, composer-edited sheet music from the Julliard School here: The Juilliard Manuscript Collection Website.

“In 2006 Juilliard received a trove of precious music manuscripts from the billionaire collector and financier Bruce Kovner. The collection includes autograph scores, sketches, composer-emended proofs and first editions of major works by Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, Chopin, Schubert, Liszt, Ravel, Stravinsky, Copland and other masters of the classical music canon. Many of the manuscripts had been unavailable for generations. Among the items are the printer’s manuscript of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, complete with Beethoven’s hand-written amendments, that was used for the first performance in Vienna in 1824; Mozart’s autograph of the wind parts of the final scene of The Marriage of Figaro; Beethoven’s arrangement of his monumental Große Fuge for piano four hands; Schumann’s working draft of his Symphony No. 2; and manuscripts of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 and Piano Concerto No. 2. The entire collection has since been digitized and can be viewed online.[10]”  Source:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juilliard_School

Labor Day with family

Girls at PianoYesterday, we enjoyed a beautiful day with Dr. Olin and Mrs. Elsie Race at their newly refurbished home.  The day dawned misty and cool as we traveled westward, but the rain held off until after grandma’s home-cooked prize-winning dinner.  It was great to brainstorm about musical ideas, books, music teaching techniques and tools, and psychology with my aunts and mother, all of whom are teachers.  Harold Street was cheerful with young voices squealing for joy in the arms of their aunts and uncles from “far away”.  Cousins chatted about current interests.  Of course, pictures must be taken as well…those pictures you hope to fondly remember, but also seem to exaggerate your frizzled hair, plump waistline and tired eyes.  Well, maybe someday they will be beloved.  Listening to grandpa’s memories of old times are some of my treasured moments.  His wealth of history about Pennsylvania people, churches, organizations, ideas, politics, and, most of all, his devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ, have shaped my own ideas and have helped me see present situations with a perspective more matured than my own.  His guidance is not a pushy, demanding one, but influential, nonetheless.  Both of his sons volunteered to attend Bible college and, finding their life’s purpose, have served as ordained ministers of the Gospel for decades.  His daughter has been devoted to the teaching and promotion of the Lord through uplifting Christian music.  Her joy of teaching shines through her eyes, voice, and face and her students have seen success in their musical endeavors.  It has been a long time since so many parts of the family have united, but even in the face of the long journeys home, we are thankful for the extra efforts we have made to be together.

The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra Performs Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, Alexander Schimpf performs Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, and the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra Joins for a Great Evening

“Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique is without doubt a turning point in the history of orchestral music. Written only four years after Beethoven’s death, it’s the first programmatic symphony of the Romantic period and tells the story of a young artist who is madly in love but unfortunately his desires are not reciprocated. Berlioz’s cyclic use of the music motifs along with a large and lush orchestration makes him a very distinctive composer of the early 19th century.

If Berlioz is revolutionary with his orchestral music, then surely Beethoven is with his Piano Concertos as well!

Alexander Schimpf, a winner of last year’s Cleveland International Piano Competition will perform the intricate and fabulous Concerto No. 4 which is considered to be one of the central works of the piano concerto literature.

In addition, the Williamsport Symphony Youth Orchestra will join us for a “side by side” treat that will showcase their talent.”

For Sale: Baldwin Spinet Piano Newly Refinished in Gloss Black

Baldwin French Provincial Spinet Piano Gloss Black Refinished 3 Pedals 88 Keys

View this item on Ebay at http://www.ebay.com/itm/271179149071?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

This Baldwin piano was recently professionally refinished by Julia Race Music Services.

  • The former color was Regal Oak, but is now Gloss Black.

  • The serial numbers fit the Baldwin Acrosonic, (Please see pianoworld.com for Baldwin and Acrosonic) but there was no other reference to the Acrosonic sub-brand on the piano.  Usually, if a piano was designated Acrosonic by Baldwin, there would be a second label to the far right of the center “Baldwin” label on the center front of the piano.  According to the serial number 1284647, if Acrosonic, this piano was built between 1981 and 1982.

  • The French Provincial or French Country design is evident in the scroll work above the piano desk, the fancy key cover handles and the curved legs on the piano and bench.

  • The touch on the sound is pleasantly soft without being too easy, quiet, or mushy.  The touch would be soft enough for a beginner, but not annoyingly soft to an experienced pianist.  The repetition rate is very nice.

  • The sound is nice and clear, loud enough for a group, and quiet enough for your living room.

  • As part of the refinishing of this piano, a previously missing oak bottom panel was replaced and refinished with another oak panel.

  • The key bed, piano back and entire case were thoroughly cleaned.

  • Surfaces blemishes were repaired with a polyurethane product before being sanded and refinished with a quality polyurethane glossy color.  The rectangle stylistic frames on the exterior case sides were removed for a more modern look.

  • The felts are still in good shape.  The keys were professionally removed and cleaned along with the keybed.  The front and balance rail felts and paper punchings were removed and replaced with new ones.  The keys were leveled.

  • The tuning pin bushings are very tight.  As a professional piano technician, I have come across many levels of bushing holding power, and these bushings are better than most pianos I have dealt with.

  • The piano has been tuned and will be tuned once more to A440 before sale.

  • The measurements of the piano are as follows:

       Length at the lid: 57″.
Width at the key bed: 25″.
Height from the floor to the top of the lid: 36 1/4″.

I encourage prospective piano buyers to view this piano personally.  Please call Julia at (570) 295-0371 to arrange a meeting.  I do not ship internationally.  I also do not receive payment without a visit from the buyer, in person, due to internet scams and common sense.  Please do not email me with a request to send payment without coming to see the instrument, because I will not respond to that request.  Shipping may be available upon an individual basis for destinations within 200 miles of zip code 17745.  Please call Larry at (570) 295-5277 to see if this may be an option for you before bidding on this item.
