Welcome Back Music Students!

As the exciting and heartwarming memories of the holidays linger in our homes, I would like to thank each new and returning music student for their lesson dedication.  As you perform the music you practiced over the Christmas season, there is a new sense of purpose and direction in your style.  It is exciting to see improvement each week and know that you love to learn.  I want to help each new piece become easy for you by the end of the lesson, so your focus can remain on improvements throughout the week.  As you lay a good foundation in note reading, timing, and lyric study, the interpretation, color, and expressiveness of style begins to glow.  Each practice day has led to improved musicianship, and there are remarkable jumps of skill on a weekly basis.  I am excited to be a part of your musical journey and look forward to working with you in 2016.

A great tool to use when dusting your piano soundboard.

SST 104 Spurlock Soundboard Cleaners from PianoTec Supply Company

I like the design of this tool better than some of the other soundboard cleaning tools as this one does not scratch the soundboard, and cleans the piano soundboard precisely.

Piano Tuning by Julia

Does your piano sound a little off key?  Do a few notes annoy you every time you play?  Are you concerned about the quality of your choir’s next recorded event?  Do you find that your ears rebel during piano practice?  Has it been six months or more since your piano was tuned last?  It may be time to schedule a piano tuning.  In our temperate climate, weather changes and sensitive woods in the piano affect the tension of the strings, causing variations in tone.  Most pianos should be tuned twice a year to adjust to the new changes in temperature and humidity.  If your piano causes your ears to suffer, contact Julia Race at (570) 295-0371 to schedule your piano tuning.

Characteristics:  The French Provincial or French Country design is evident in the scroll work above the piano desk, the fancy key cover handles and the curved legs on the piano and bench.  The touch on the sound is quite soft.  Both my young students and more experienced pianists enjoy the touch on this piano. The repetition rate is good.  The sound is nice and clear, loud enough for a group, and quiet enough for your living room.  I have been using this in for a small church and piano lessons since it was refinished.  It has met needs for solos, ensemble work, personal enjoyment, piano lessons, and congregational accompaniment.
Repairs:  This Baldwin piano was recently professionally refinished by Julia Race Music Services.  The former color was Regal Oak, but is now Gloss Black.  As part of the refinishing of this piano, the missing oak bottom panel was replaced and refinished with another oak panel.  The key bed, piano back and entire case were thoroughly cleaned.  Surfaces blemishes were repaired with a polyurethane product before being sanded and refinished with a quality polyurethane glossy color. The rectangle stylistic frames on the exterior case sides were removed for a more modern look.  A small repair was made in the lower hitch pin area.  The felts are still in good shape and the tuning pin bushings are tight, helping a tuning to last.  As a professional piano technician, I have come across many levels of bushing holding power, and these bushings are better than most pianos I have dealt with.  The piano has been tuned and will be tuned once more to A440 before sale.
Dimensions:  The measurements of the piano are as follows:

Length at the lid: 57″.
Width at the key bed: 25″.
Height from the floor to the top of the lid: 36 1/4″.
Shipping:  I encourage prospective piano buyers to view this piano personally. Please call Julia at (570) 295-0371 to arrange a meeting.  I do not ship internationally. Shipping may be available upon an individual basis for destinations within 200 miles of zip code 17745.  Please call Julia to see if this may be an option for you before trying to buy this item.

Age:  The serial numbers fit the Baldwin Acrosonic, but there was no other reference to the Acrosonic sub-brand on the piano. According to the serial number 1284647, if Acrosonic, this piano was built between 1981 and 1982.  Please scroll down to the end of the blog to see the list of serial numbers for Baldwin/Acrosonic.

Regulating Your Piano

By Newfound Pianos

“Piano Regulating Needs,
As a mechanical device, your piano’s “action” needs regular adjustment called “Regulating”. A regulated piano is more responsive to the demands of the pianist. Actions parts swell and shrink with humidity changes and it is not uncommon for a new piano to need regulating within the first year as parts begin to break in when used. Likewise all movable parts on any new or older piano show the effects of wear as the piano is used. Regulation is needed to compensate for the settling of cloth, felt and buckskin aside from the dimensional changes in wooden and wool parts due to changes in relative humidity. Small adjustments are common recommendations by your piano technician and should be accomplished in order to avoid unnecessary repairs and replacement of parts in order to avoid more frequent full scale regulations.”

Save Your Piano – Don’t Spray Oils

This season, as we prepare to receive company, we dust off traditions and customs that are dear to us.  When it comes to dusting your piano, remember to spray your cloth first and then dust your piano.

“My piano does not stay in tune!”

Silicones and oils that are sprayed onto the piano can make their way to the wood doughnut-like bushings that surround the tuning pins.  These bushings need to tightly grip the tuning pins so your piano stays in tune.  When they become slippery, the tuning pins will not stay where the piano technician puts them, and withing a few minutes, the pin is unwinding toward the flat position.  This situation is common to dry-rotted pin bushings, or pianos that have received too much dry heat and not enough moisture.

The Dampp-Chaser company sells smart sensors that automatically detect the amount of moisture in the air and adjust that to provide either more dampness or more dryness in your specific situation.  This is a real boon for churches, schools and homes where excess dryness, humidity or change is involved.  The pianos I tune that are in the best condition have a Dampp Chaser installed.  As a piano technician, I can install a Dampp-Chaser unit on request.

For older pianos that have seen neglect or oils, Garfield’s Pinblock Restorer, or PinTite may be a help.  The Garfield’s product takes a week to set, the PinTite sets up within the same day.  Both applications require a vertical piano to be placed on it’s back during the process.  Another method to restore the necessary friction is to install a tuning pin bushing.  This method involves un-stringing the pin in question, inserting a thin metallic shim, re-inserting the pin, restringing the wire, and tuning.  Naturally, I take the condition of the piano wire into condition on a job like that.  I would not care to try it on rusty piano wire, or when most of the bushings are loose.  On piano restorations, sometimes the entire pinblock and/or individual bushings are replaced.  These large and expensive jobs require specialized tools and a highly-trained craftsman.

Three main helps are:

1.  Do not spray furniture oils or silicone-based products onto your piano.

2.  Use a Dampp-Chaser system to protect your investment.

3.  Repair existing damages with a pinblock solution or bushings.

Julia is available to help you with your piano tunings and repair.  For scheduling, please contact her through the online form or at 570-295-0371.

Labor Day with family

Girls at PianoYesterday, we enjoyed a beautiful day with Dr. Olin and Mrs. Elsie Race at their newly refurbished home.  The day dawned misty and cool as we traveled westward, but the rain held off until after grandma’s home-cooked prize-winning dinner.  It was great to brainstorm about musical ideas, books, music teaching techniques and tools, and psychology with my aunts and mother, all of whom are teachers.  Harold Street was cheerful with young voices squealing for joy in the arms of their aunts and uncles from “far away”.  Cousins chatted about current interests.  Of course, pictures must be taken as well…those pictures you hope to fondly remember, but also seem to exaggerate your frizzled hair, plump waistline and tired eyes.  Well, maybe someday they will be beloved.  Listening to grandpa’s memories of old times are some of my treasured moments.  His wealth of history about Pennsylvania people, churches, organizations, ideas, politics, and, most of all, his devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ, have shaped my own ideas and have helped me see present situations with a perspective more matured than my own.  His guidance is not a pushy, demanding one, but influential, nonetheless.  Both of his sons volunteered to attend Bible college and, finding their life’s purpose, have served as ordained ministers of the Gospel for decades.  His daughter has been devoted to the teaching and promotion of the Lord through uplifting Christian music.  Her joy of teaching shines through her eyes, voice, and face and her students have seen success in their musical endeavors.  It has been a long time since so many parts of the family have united, but even in the face of the long journeys home, we are thankful for the extra efforts we have made to be together.
